Elio David Monachesi was born on July 19, 1905 in Macerata, Italy. He came to the United States in 1912 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1931. He earned his B.A. in 1927 and M.A. in 1928 from the University of Missouri. In 1931, he was awarded his Ph.D. by the University of Minnesota. Dr. Monachesi joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an instructor in sociology in 1928.
